Like most places, the average age of our population is rising as more people are living longer, so we are working closely with residents to help them maintain their independence and further improve the cost effectiveness of our service to meet the ongoing rise in demand.

Reporting to our Asset & Compliance Lead Officer, our Compliance Officer role will manage and offer guidance in all aspects of fire safety in residential buildings owned or managed by the Council’s Housing Landlord. You will act as the main point of contact for compliance related issues including the commissioning of works via maintenance or specialist companies. Training will be available to enable the Officer to ensure the Council remains legally compliant and adheres to regulations and guidance.

 Ideally you will have experience of working within a regulatory framework where compliance, risk management and precise outcomes are essential. A comprehensive understanding of fire safety, asbestos awareness particularly where it relates to social housing would be advantageous. Having, or developing, a good knowledge of risk assessments and safety measures and controls within buildings, you should also be familiar with the Health and Safety Act, Regulatory Reform and all current Building Regulations.

With a customer-focused, flexible, cooperative and well organised working style, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate compliance information clearly and effectively to colleagues in other departments, good presentation skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure, think strategically and problem solve.

  • Knowledge of management for fire safety and asbestos compliance in communal and individual residential buildings, including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2015
  • Knowledge of the Fire Safety Act and resultant guidance: Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety
  • Fire risk assessment and fire safety measures and controls within buildings and management of actions arising.
  • Knowledge of the Building Regulations and British Standards
  • Thorough working knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite / Google Drive and Documents
  • Current knowledge of the Control of Asbestos Regulations, Approved Code Of Practice and HSE Guidance (Managing and working with asbestos L143)
  • Familiarity with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Familiarity with Construction and Design Management (CDM) Regulations
